Stones on roads

close

Whilst whizzing down the M6/M5/M4 last week, I was pondering all the sites I was probably driving past at 70mph+ and started to wonder how many sites are visible from our mryiad motorways.

I remember first clapping eyes on Gunnerkeld, doing 80mph on the M6 in Cumbria and squealing with surprise as I saw this amazing circle, within feet of the hard shoulder. I know that the Devils Arrows are pretty damn close to the A1/M1 in Yorskshire too and I have learnt to spot the banks of Mayburgh Henge just before reaching jct 40 at Penrith.

Are there any other really obvious ones?

Not quite what your'e looking for V but at Bridge of Earn the M9 goes right over the site the Moncrieffe stone circle and henge .The circle was removed to the east .

Liddington Castle from the M4? (not stones, but earth)

I once caught a glimpse of Glastonbury Tor from the M5,
a canal went under the motorway and was straight as an arrow aligned on the tor.

You can see Mayburgh from the M6 too, I never saw it till I'd actually visited properly, now it's ridiculously obvious.
Nine thingies in Dorset is right by the road too.
Is there not a road near Stonehenge?

Whitehouse 4-Poster is beside the road, the Mare and Foal is very visible from the Military Road, Toothills long barrow towers over Bolton's Ring Road and the Kirkhaugh circle is beside the road too.

At the Leys of Marlee, the road goes right through the middle! It's very cool but it's not a motorway. So I guess it doesn't count :-(

The Rollrights are quite close to a road! And may be much closer if certain powers that be get their way!!

In the past few weeks an access road to an industrial estate has been built over the Rotherwas Ribbon, thereby rendering someone fabulously wealthy.

EH are considering whether to schedule the Ribbon but have indicated that "it may take some time".

Anytime now, no doubt.
