High Barrows

close

Hello !

I heard somewhere that Adam's Grave is the highest (or tallest) Long Barrow in the country. How high is it ? Are there any others that are remotely close ? I think that EH consider that there are 300 known, in the UK, and that the majority have been ploughed almost flat.

There is a 'hidden agenda' in these questions - that won't take much working out ...

A guestimate from memory is that it's bloody tall. I'd say at least 5 or 6m. If you measured it from the base of the trenches that run down its sides it would easily add 1m. It's been a long time since I was there though, so it could have grown in my memory.

I think we'll find our answer in the 'have you say' at the bottom.

And thanks.

(I can see that I'll have to make a simple clinometer for my next visit to Notlob). I've been investigating an ancient boundary ditch, there, but it's confusing. There might in fact be a pair of ditches in places - it's very difficult to make out ...
