And a ps for Nigel: The Portable Antiquities Occifer photographed both the broken stone axe head and the bit of Bog Oak roundwood, from last year's fieldwork. He wasn't sure about the preserved wood but loved the bit of hatchet that had hacked it. I've got a broad piece of the same stuff and will try and get a smooth end to scan for 'dendrochronological studies'. (Geordie has close links with Scandinavian dialect - allegedly).

Cheers SL. It must be rare - to say the least - to have a possible axe-and-axed pair of artefacts.

Anyhow -
Call that an axe? Naah mate, THIS is an axe - http://www.culture.gov.uk/Reference_library/Press_notices/archive_2007/dcms024_07.htm

I'm always a bit cautious of these types of competitions, in particular this segment of the terms:

16) By entering the competition, you grant Take a view and its supporting partners a non-exclusive, irrevocable, royalty-free license to reproduce, enlarge, publish or exhibit, on any media, the images for any purpose connected with the competition. This may include, but is not limited to:

inclusion in the Take a view book
display at any exhibitions
on a secure web browser for judging purposes
on the Take a view website and on the websites of sponsors and supporters
for use in press releases to be distributed to national, regional & specialist press giving information about or promoting the competition
on any merchandise commissioned by the organisers

The information given in these Terms and Conditions is correct, but Take a view reserve the right to change any of the above without prior notice

So any photos you submit, winner or no, can be used by them forever for whatever they wish and passed on to anyone they wish for similar use. And you pay them for the privilidge. £7 for one photo! This kind of thing does quite a bit of damage to stock libraries and the photographers that depend on them, why pay for scenery photos when people will pay you to enter a competition and send thousands and thousands of their best?
