Lifting stones.

close

Hello guys,

The main reason for my interest is that I belong to a small group of " stone lifting enthusiasts " within the weightlifting community.

There is quite a following for the " Scottish stones of strength " with a number of the more historical stones getting a lot of coverage, with weightlifters from around the globe travelling to lift these stones.

As a resident of the southern counties I have been researching a number of more southerly stones that may be linked to a " lifting legend " at one time or another.

The blue stone of old hartley is well documented as being lifted by the blacksmith Willie carr, and is now set in concrete as a monument.

I was very interested to see that your contributer " hob " also showed a photo of another blue stone , stating that this was the original blue stone of old hartley

I would be very interested in obtaining the exact location of this stone, and whether in " hob's" opinion it would be liftable.

A stone of this shape to be " liftable " it would be in the 120 - 150kg range, which in bluestone would probably equate to 3ft x 2ft maximum, anything larger and it would take the " legends and ghosts of the past " to lift.

Also I would be very interested if any other contributers have come across any other simarly sizes stones that could be described as lifting stones.
Honestly , I am not mad .... there are quite a collection of weightlifters very interested in the history and challenge of this type of stone

many thanks

Roger

Hallo Roger,

The 'other' bluestone (This one?) is close to the pub. I'm not sure if there's much to support the claim that this is the original stone, the information was given to me by a barmaid in the pub. Give them a ring and see what they say?

It might just be liftable, by someone who practises such activities. It probably has a larger volume as the igneous thing set in concrete in front of the pub, but I think it's sandstone, so is probably a bit less dense.

If you get any joy, please give me a shout should you ever go to do the lifting, I'd be interested in observing the proceedings :)
