hi there - can anyone recommend some rousing dramatic stones or other resonant site easily gettable to and from london by train in a day? cheers

Waterloo to Salisbury takes less than a couple of hours. Theres a bus service to Stonehenge from Salisbury station that should take less than 20 mins.
I know all the demerits of Stonehenge, but it's easily reachable.

Dunno about the train but yr closest megaliths are the barrows on the medway valley near maidstone. Kits Coty, Coldrum etc.
