I'm visiting Harris from 24th July to 5th August to stay with friends. I've never visited before but have realised how close to Callanish we will be. From the other posts I realise that it could be a good time to visit. Any suggestions when the best time to visit would be during my stay, and what to look out for, who to talk to etc.? Other than reading and enjoying Julian's books I havn't really hit the stones trail, this sounds like a good place to start.

Hi there

If you just read back through some of these forums you will find loads of info about sites and good times to visit (Gerald Ponting's webiste has all the info with relation to the moon skim at Callanish) but I would also recommend getting hold of a book called "Lewis & Harris; History & Prehistory" by Francis Thomposn, which is a gazetter of sites on the islands. They were selling it on the Cal-Mac ferry from Stornoway but I also picked up a copy from a bookshop in Ullapool.

You're in for the trip of a lifetime, I envy you!!!

Hope that doesn't mean you're leaving the island on the 5th, as that is one of the good nights to see the southern moon skim (if clear!) - see the data on my site at http://home.clara.net/gponting/page45.html

The evening of the 4th, you'd not see the moon set within the circle, but it would pass behind the tallest stone - still quite impressive with 83% of the moon's disc illuminated.

Thanks for the advice, i'm really looking forward to it
