I've just returned to California from the Motherland and my continuing tramping around to ancient sites. I used a copy of The Modern Antiquarian to try to find some of the sites in there with mixed success. It's really too bad there aren't better, more complete directions to finding the sites.
However, in Wales I found a stone circle (this one is not in the book) that is not in Burl's guide, nor on Tom Bullock's fabulous CD of photos of hundreds of stone circles and rows in the UK and Brittany. It is not hidden either, it is right on the coast path between St. Davids and Fishguard near the village of Travine. It is right at the sea in a meadow behind a farm. There is a stone style at the road to access the coast path, but no mention of the circle, which is right there! The outlier stone is in the farmyard at the end of a stone wall. The ambience is outstanding and it is a fine circle, I"m guessing about 35 feet across. A few of the stones have fallen. I have pictures of it if anyone is interested, just email me at [email protected] and I'll send them. I also have a picture of the farm it is behind. My friend there says the farm belongs to (or did belong to) the parents of singer Cearis Mathis (spelling?) of the group Catatonia, if that rings anyone's bells.
Most circles have names, I hope someone knows this one.
