Hi folks, I've found out that I will be going to London for work on the 28th, actually will probably be staying in High Wycombe, and am also trying to arrange the flight over for early Sunday morning on the 27th, landing at Heathrow.

I took a hired car from Heathrow to Swindon a few years back and I dont remember it being too long a drive (by my standards anyway!) so am wondering if its possible to get a bus to see some sights like Avebury/Stonehenge/West Kennet Long Barrow or am I better off trying to see some local sights instead? I'll be there all week but with the dark evenings closing in Sunday might be my only time to take in some sights.

Any and all advice appreciated!!

Cheers,

Ken

A hired car from High Wycombe to Wiltshire should enable you to see the major attractions. I don't know if a bus would be of much use.

The London area has lots of things to see and photograph - but no megaliths to speak of.

What about taking the coach from Heathrow to Reading and then (trains are not always good on Sundays though because they mend the lines) the London/Bristol Meads train, getting off at Chippenham, which is only about 8 miles from Avebury, and then some nice kind person who lives in the district can ferry you around, its the Silbury meet on the 26th so someone might be around...

If you are hiring a car, the medway tombs are well worth a visit and (I think) are the closest megalithic stuff really worth seeing to London.

If you are staying at High Wycombe, then the Rollrights, Waylands Smithy and Uffington are no great distance by car

hire a car!! you definitely dont want to be bus-ing it on a sunday... you'd get to see a lot more sites under your own steam... I'd do avebury, silbury, WKL, waylands and the rollrights if I were you... a lot to fit in admittedly, but if you only have a day get up early, head up the M40 and back to HW down the M4 for a whistlestop tour...

Thanks for all the suggestions, lots to see next time I'm over in that direction which shouldn't be too long. Kits Cotys and the surrounding sites look right up my street. There's been a change of plan and now I'm going to Newcastle next Sunday instead for a few days, I'll let all your brains recover from all that racking and hunt some sites down on the map but if there's anything unmissable near Newcastle city, I'm all ears!
