Alton Barnes

close

I love Avbury, Stonehenge, Callenish etc and with some exceptions visit them frequently as I can.

Its Free and even the kids love it

Theres something very tranquil and spritual about them, although I 'm not in to all that "New Age Druid" bullshit

I have heard about Alton Barnes recently and Crop Circles.

Is this a tourist trap or is it wort a visit. I am mildly interested in the crop circle phenomena.

Regards Mole

Alton Barnes is in the middle of the Vale of Pewsey and the Cropcrap phenomenonon.
Believers hang out at the Barge inn at Honey st where you can hear all about the latest formations, abductions and vapid new-aged twitterings from a variety of nutcases.

Ps. Alton Priors church is worth a visit to see the sarcen stones under the church floor boards.

Alton Barnes isn't touristy at all. But the countryside is fantastic. Overlooking East Field, by Adam's Grave you realy get the impression of 'rolling' hills. You feel like you're on top of the world!
The Barge Inn is full of odd people in June/July, and I love it there! There is a room with a painted 'cosmic ceiling' depicting crop circles and other Whiltshire Wierdness. On a sunny day, sitting by the canal with a beer being overlooked by the white horse is just plain bliss to me.
I well can imagine that the locals get pissed off with the UFO crowd & the circlemalers, but I make a point to visit Avebury at least twice every year, once at Xmas, and once around late July to enjoy the scatty vibes. I know it's all rubbish, but I like it.

Pete really doesn't like The Barge at Alton Barnes and I can see his point I guess. I have to say though that I've had some fun times there and met some interesting folk (and I have no interest in crop circles either).

On the plus side the pub is right by the canal, has a big garden, nice walks and camping facilties at the back (£4 a night) all good stuff if you have kids. There's live music there this Saturday (19th) and Avebury is only about 15 minuets' drive away (though I doubt if you'll get anywhere to park in or near Avebury this weekend if you're driving there). If you do go to The Barge check out The Bridge as well. The Bridge is another pub right by the canal and also has a big garden and pretty good food.

In defence of crop circles:

I am a cynic and don't believe the rutting deer/UFO theories.

However I DO enjoy crop circles, preferring to see them as temporary landscape sculptures. If you see them this way, they're rather beautiful.

Alton Barnes is lovely. I went to see the mega crop circle there in ... was it 1991 or 92?... the one that featured on the cover of the Led Zep compilation album and it WAS very impressive. I have some nice photies of my daughter - then just a baby, really - toddling round in it. Big circle, Small girl. Very cute :-)

You'll enjoy it.

"although I 'm not in to all that "New Age Druid""

Now where is that quoted from I wonder? I'm a Pagan Druid. Does that class as the same thing?

Out of curiosity.....is the £1000 reward put up by the Pagan/Druid/whatever community for information leading to the conviction of whoever vandalised the Rollright Stones a part of this "bullshit" of which you speak?

Sorry, I just get a little tired sometimes of the knee-jerk "better slag of the weirdos in case they think I am one because I like megaliths" type comments around here.

Thnks for your comments and sorry to any one I may have inadvertantly offended.

I hope to make a trip there this weekend

Cheers Mole
