I'm heading back to Stanton Moor next week, and I wondered if there was anything else to look out for that isn't on my tick-list?
So far, I'll be visiting...

Stanton Moor 1 (stone circle)
Nine Ladies (Stanton Moor II)
Stanton Moor III
Stanton Moor IV

The last two are ring-cairns, I've visited these before.

The Cork Stone
The Andle Stone
Doll Tor
Rowtor Rocks rock art.

All of those (except Stanton Moor I) I've visited before, and they're all in walking distance. I wondered if there's anything else on the moor, of if there's some detailed maps on line of the area? I've got the book Rock Around The Peak, and it's a fab little book, but I wonder if there's anything around that's more in-depth about Stanton Moor's megalithic delights?

(I'll be camping at Barn Farm in Birchover, so stuff like Nine Stones Close will be a little too far for walking).

Cheers!

Have you seen Andy Johnstone's (common era) book:

By Dol Tor.

By Rowtor rocks. Ask Rachael at Rocking Stones farm for permission first though, she usually lets people up if they ask. if you don't then be prepared to be kicked off as soon as the dogs hear you. (just follow the windy drive around and uphill till you reach the house)

You'll probably have to negotiate brambles at both sites so no shorts. :)

Btw Harv, weather being well i'm staying at nearby Middlehills campsite fri/Saturday, Barn farm will be too busy/noisy for me with he carnival going on.

You staying around Sunday? it's very possible that i could pick you up and take you over to nine Stones close and the other sites in that area if you'd like?

There are loads of barrows on there worth seing besides the ring cairns. Dyer's prehistoric england lists a few worthy of inspection including a square barrow. I put this together a few years back that might help http://www.juamei.com/stantonmoorcairns/

Not prehistoric, but down in Birchover up behind the aptly named Druids Inn are some rock cut stairs leading to some lovely rocks to clamber a and explore. Barn Farm is a lovely base to explore the local area, you have a great time!

Oops, double tap, soz.
