I'd like to answer as suspect certain others will not get drawn. Firstly, I did enjoy the series, particularly the first series when it was tucked away late in the schedules, a hidden gem of a programme. It took off with the second series and thus became a bit more contentious.

Secondly, I am not passionately opposed to the past-time of metal-detectoring if it is undertaken responsibly, with permissions and the understanding that anything that looks important is reported to PAS. I am uneasy about anything seen to promote the 'treasure-hunting' aspect of it. I have learnt a lot from people like Nigel Swift and his colleagues at Heritage Action. Having said that, there was a time we were antagonist towards each other - back in the days when I was associated with the now defunct Avebury Forum (I'll be the first to say some of its members were hot heads, whilst others took what it had to offer and applied that knowledge to their own projects). I've long since changed my mind about Heritage Action/Journal and came to see it as an ethical, dedicated group of like-minded people who work tirelessly to protect our heritage. If they say metal detectoring is ethically ambiguous then I go along with that.

Watched the full second series last night. I just love Larry the farmer with the 'invisible' dogs. Great character and actor.

Talking of which - part 4 of series 1 is on BBC2 tonight at 10pm.

At last...

Detectorists series three starts on Wednesday, 8 November at 10pm on BBC4.

YABBA DABBA DOO!!!

Well it is coming to an end, so a rather lovely article by Fiona Sturges in the Guardian..

Thought the magpies did not too bad in the acting scenes so the Unthank - Magpies, to end the series.

Really enjoyed the series in strangely guilty sort of way, little bit like listening to Pet Sounds when you would normally play Electric Ladyland.

I enjoyed this Tube review of Detectorists as it was an off-the-cuff effort by an American who sort of stumbled his way through it, but with genuine love of the programme.
Coincidentally, I have many friends in the States who are now watching it on Netflex and adoring it for it's 'Britishness'.

Somehow, by hook or by crook, they must find their way back to the field where the Saxon boat burial lies, to go full circle - as that was the original quest and it should end there IMO!
