Somewhere to have the ancestors (or whatever) close at hand? And used from the Neolithic right until Iron Age times? Very interesting stuff. http://www.orkneyjar.com/history/earth-houses/index.html Personally I think it was a childhood viewing of a Watch programme? about Skara Brae that got me interested in all this stuff.
