Castlerigg (Stone Circle) — Fieldnotes

Last port of call on our tour. We've been here a few times before but not in Winter.
The gates at the entrance to the site were padlocked and a sign was placed asking not to enter the site due to the outbreak of the foot and mouth disease.
Oh well , better do as they ask.

Mayburgh Henge (Circle henge) — Fieldnotes

Arrived first at King Arthur's Round Table, got out of the car and the first thing we noticed was how cold it was compared to Long and Little Meg, still that wasn't going to put us off.
Walked onto King Arthur's and was instantly taken, tried to visualise the whole henge, kept walking round accompanied by some very inquisitive lambs.Excellent.
Walked the small way to Mayburgh Henge, past the christian millenium abomination, went up the rise at the side of the site and was totally blew away looking in to the site.
This place is so amazing, not even the nearby M6 traffic could spoil the whole thing.

Little Meg (Stone Circle) — Fieldnotes

Found Little Meg no problem, we seemed to be drawn to it. Really impressive little site, the concentric circle markings on one of the stones was accentuated by the snow.Very tranquil, the only sound was the calls of two wood pigeons.
Stayed a while, took it all in then headed off to Eamont Bridge to break our Henge duck.

Long Meg & Her Daughters (Stone Circle) — Fieldnotes

Living in Whitehaven Valda and me are priviliged to have so much pre-history so close to us, so we decided to do a whirlwind tour of some of the sites with Long Meg and Her Daughters ( or Lovers ) being the first port of call.
On driving up to the site i was amazed as the road cuts right thru the middle of the circle. Meg herself is really impressive, this site blew me away and Valda got emotional walking round the stones!!! The whole area had a light covering of snow which gave the place an added extra( not that the site needed it though to impress us).
Talked to 2 enthusiasts for a while, paid our farewell to the site and headed of for Little Meg.

Blakeley Raise (Stone Circle) — Fieldnotes

MY WIFE AND MYSELF VISITED THIS CIRCLE OF SMALLISH STONES THIS AFTERNOON. THE SUN WAS SHINING ON A BEAUTIFUL CRISP DAY, 5 HORSES WERE ROAMING FREELY AND THERE WAS THE SOUND OF BAGPIPES!!!! DON'T KNOW WHERE FROM, ASSUMED SOMEONE HAD BEEN THROWN OUT OF THERE HOME AND WERE MADE TO PRACTICE IN THE NEAR BY FOREST! ALTHOUGH THE STONES HAVE BEEN RESET IT IS STILL IMPRESSIVE. NICE SETTING AS WELL.
