Barra Heritage Centre (Museum, Barra)

I would love to be able to provide a review but it closed early on the day I arrived and didn't open at all on the day I left.

Dont you just HATE that!!

Quite easy to dismiss this as idiosincratic of the Western Isles and of the laid back island attitude, but I find this tourist UNfriendly way of operating pervasive throughout all of Scotland. Com'on guys let's get it together. (and that's from someone involved in the Scottish Tourist industry.)

Sorry, Heritage Centre, only 1 point!!

Hebridean Toffee (Cafe, Castlebay)

For most of the year this is the most scenic little factory in the Western Isles. They produce Hebridean Toffee (non-sassenachs call it tablet), which they export to Balmoral, The Scottish Parliament etc' etc'.... however if the weather is fine they have a small extension patio area built out into the bay where some wonderful homemade food including open sandwiches, panninis and beverages will be served.
Well worth a visit, Karen, the joint powner with her husband Gerry, is a perfect hostess. This is the closest that I found to a tourist friendly venue/shop/facility on the island.

Castlebay Hotel (Hotel, Castlebay)

A very good quality hotel, although perhaps not for those on a limited budget. Fantastic views over the bay to Kisimul's Castle and to Vatersay.

All meals that I had were excellent - had Razorfish as a starter - very unusual! No culinary experience in the Hebrides would be complete without fresh, golfball sized Scallops... delicious. Oh, yes ... nearly forgot....try some cockles ... if you arrived by plane (as I did) you are eating the runway.

The owners are very much part of the Island community and are a good source of information. Although, as with the rest of the Islanders, not very hot on things archaeological.

Look upon the steep climb up the steps at the front of the hotel as a good precursor of things to come for Barra's moorland megalith hunters.

Kilmartin House (Museum, Argyll)

Nothing but praise.
Great museum, great shop, mind blowing location.
There's a cafe restaurant next door, too.
Dont forget to visit the film show in the tiny auditorium upstairs from the shop. Very atmospheric.
