Avenis (Long Barrow) — Fieldnotes

Not sure you were in the right field Sweetcheat, it's obvious when you find it. Still quite tall, runs parallel to the road with an obvious forecourt. It's in a great spot, unusually on the side of the hill, in a sort of natural amphitheatre, with great views across the valley towards Frampton Mansell. A savage spot, as holy and enchanted as ere beneath a waning moon was haunted by woman wailing for her daemon lover....

Avening Burial Chambers — Fieldnotes

The chambers are still there and I just visited tham. 2 are roofed and one you can get inside. Not easly to find but persistence pays. It's great they have survived their travels.

Upper Swell (Long Barrow) — Miscellaneous

The 'official' name for this barrow (GLO 24) is 'Pole's Wood East'. The wood is Pole's Wood (believe it or not) and there is a well preserved long barrow (Pole's Wood South) just over the field. Darvill also lists a 'Pole's Wood West' but it the map ref doesn't seem to tie in with anything an it's not marked on the OS maps unlike the other Swell barrows

Oldfield Wood (Long Barrow) — Fieldnotes

Tumpless. I definately found the spot this barrow used to be, with grid refs and OS map, but it's there no more. Pity it's a great spot. A few (large) old stones hapahazardly scattered against the wall are all that the farmer has left to mark the end of 5 millenia. hey ho
