This camp is right next to the farm where I go hop picking every year.. Not a great deal to see here, but an intense atmosphere, especially in the mist.. the pilgrims way runs right past here, probably an important route way back into pre christian times. If you carry on along the path towards canterbury you'll find a community orchard full of stunning old apple trees, one of the last of its kind in kent.

I have a special place in my heart for scutchamer.. I join the ridgeway at east ilsley where it crosses the A34, so this is the first antiquity I reach. Only another 45 or so miles to Avebury!!
It's definitely a mysterious place, the first time I did the ridgeway there was a gigantic bonfire burning there. Shame about the rubbish though and as for those trees.. too many knobs at scutchamer I reckon!!

Long Man site vandalised
Within the past few months, hunt - supporting vandals have painted the slogan "NO BAN", in letters which must be at least 8 feet high, roughly 200m to the left of the long man of wilmington. Unlike previous "pranks" involving paint, this has been done by burning the grass away completely, I think they may have used creosote. This crass piece of political graffiti, executed by individuals who claim to love and respect the countryside, may be visible for years to come unless some sort of re-turfing occurs. I'm on to the powers that be to find out more, will keep y'all posted...
