Cairn Avel is a low lying cairn, 0.3 miles SW of Carnavel Farm on the outskirts of Carsphairn.
This robbed cairn retains a significant presence on the horizon. However the later addition of a small cairn on top of Cairn Avel spoils it's classical shape.
It is a short detour from the Bardennoch Hill path.
Take the Polmaddy Public Path from Carnavel Farm junction W of Carsphain (parking is possible). At Carnavel Farm you are guided through a paddock. At the end of this paddock the path turns L uphill. Cairn Avel is c. 300 yards straight ahead at this point however turning R to follow the field perimeter avoids some marshy land.

A short long cairn (pardon?) - with good views of the surrounding area.

Open access thanks to Dumfries and Galloway's Archaeosights scheme.
