The Lost Stones of Leicestershire and Rutland

Not being known for it’s prehistoric remains (did history begin here with the Romans? - NO!), Leicestershire and Rutland appear at first glance to be devoid of any megalithic remains. But, as shown by the Husbands Bosworth Causewayed Enclosure and the recent Celtic coin hoard, there was life before the Romans. As such, the stones and sites that do exist may well have long lost provenance.

Armed with a copy of Bob Trubshaw’s booklet "Standing Stones & Markstones of Leicestershire" as my guide, plus his excellent CD-ROM "Interactive Little Known Leicestershire & Rutland" to refer to, I have already visited several sites (photos & notes to appear soon).

My aim is to try and visit as many sites as is possible in the county of my birth and add them to the MA site list. Provenance may be hard to prove, but as shown by Bob’s work, there are stones and other remains out there to be found!

More to follow soon....
