So did many others in prehistory . Limestone meant that the area was sweet and fertile despite being upland

Interesting. At the risk of sounding a bit dim, would they have recognised limestone and known about the connection between it and soil fertility back then? thelonious Posted by thelonious

I imagine they would have had a good understanding of the different types of geology and recognised limestone as being distinct from other geologies , granites schists etc . It's impact on pH would have been appreciated (primarily by stock )but not necessarily understood causally . Very few limestone outcrops have engravings , even in araes where other rocks are engraved ,whether this was due to the realisation that it was likely to degrade or they were engraved and subsequently degraded is a puzzle .
