More modern 'polishing' is more than possible. I think it's granite so a 'one hit' impact wouldn't have done it, but a natural formation expanded by later use could well be the cause.
If you're up for it drewbhoy, a little bit of turf stripping may expose some more. The exposed section is about 18 inches across.
