| Do you know the story of the deer stone? It's one of the few with any firm lore. Most are said to cure warts and stuff, but few have anything more than that. The Deer Stone gets its name from the following incident A baby was left at the gates of Glendalough and St. Kevin took it in. There was noone to act as a wet nurse so Kevin prayed for help. The following morning a deer came down to the stone and filled the basin with milk. It continued to do so every day until the child grew up. This may be the last remnant of a libation ritual associated with bullauns. However, Kevin had a couple of connections to milk. One was that a cow kkept yielding large quantities of milk when all the others were barren. It was followed one morning and it was seen to lick St. Kevin's feet. St. Kevin has loads of animal stories associated with him and the book of Glendalough has some lovely poems in the margins that waffle on about nature being wonderful. I reckon that Kevin was a converted Druid. Daftest story is that he was out one day praying with his arms outstretched and a bird laid an egg on his hand. He stood there until the egg hatched.
