I for one have little doubt that cup&rings used to be coloured in pigments & stuff. It seems that such designs were coloured-in in many other parts of the world. And we do have the odd folklore remnants of milk being poured onto some carvings to both appease the spirits and to magickally affect the wind - perhaps dyes were as well. I know it's not PC to mention colouring rock-art here, but there are some northern heathens - allegedly maintaining a tradition that goes way back - who've coloured some cup&rings with different natural dyes and they do look quite incredible once they're done. The impression y' get once you see them like that, is "they (our ancestors) MUST have done that!"
