I've been struck with this idea since seeing Andy Goldsworthy's stuff with petals/leaves wrapped around (non-megalithic) stones.

Neither of these are particularly good examples, as the stones are a bit wee, but they give an idea of the kind of vibrancy of colour that could be obtained using raw plant matter.

It'd have looked pretty smart and wouldn't have left much trace, so I reckon it's fair to speculate it could have happened back in the days when.
