The Amesbury Archer, who had more artefacts buried with him than any other yet discovered here from the Neolithic/Bronze Ages, was buried in an area teeming with barrows.
His was a simple ground burial, not associated with any barrow.
If burial in a barrow was subject to status, then he should have been in a barrow.
