robbed of anything of "value" prior to modern times--

According to Burl, A Dr.Toope digging up human bones near the Sanctuary in 1678 wanted to turn them into a "noble medicine that relieved many of my distressed neighbours", nice bonemeal mash. Been sprinkling bonemeal on the garden this week, hopefully it was animal....
And another, a John Thurnam, in 1855, probed into Lanhill, lugbury, West Kennet and Adams Grave, discovering (all longbarrows) human skeletons whose skulls had been split open.. there again he was medical supt. to the mental asylum at Devizes!
