Two more possible reasons for "long"...
1. Don't they mostly tend to point somewhere specific - NW,SW or to the end of a cursus, so to point you need long.
2. I reckon you get more bang for your effort with long - a day's work might only add a foot to the surface of a round mound but 10 feet to the length of a long one, and your excavation ditch needn't be so deep.
