| NEWGRANGE - IRELAND'S FAMOUS MONUMENT - THROUGH THE MISTS OF TIME http://www.mythicalireland.com Newgrange, Ireland's most famous monument, sits overlooking the mythical Boyne river near the east coast of Ireland. It has withstood five thousand years of change as the great megalithic builders of the Stone Age passed on and the simple tools of everyday industry changed from stone to iron and on to bronze. Throughout the ages, Newgrange has been remembered in myths and folklore. Its ancient secrets were never truly forgotten, despite the waning of the glorious days of megalithic building in those distant times. This eminent masterpiece has always held a special place in the hearts of Irish people. It is the embodiment of a lost Ireland, a magical, mythical place which existed when the world of man was young and when small but intelligent communities reached out towards the vault of the sky in order to bring heaven to earth and establish a connection with the Cosmos. That wonderful treasure exists to this day, sitting proudly on a ridge overlooking the bend of the Boyne. On the shortest day of the year, Winter Solstice, a beam of light from the rising Sun penetrates the depth of the stone passage at Newgrange and illuminates the central chamber. It provides a stark and almost surreal connection with those distant ancestors who laboured long and hard to bring together their skills and knowledge in order to complete this astronomical timepiece. In order to in some way commemorate the achievements of our forebears, Mythical Ireland asked Kerem Gogus to create a digital artistic work based on Newgrange. The result is a beautiful and fitting tribute to the 5,000-year-old megalithic monuments of the Boyne Valley.
