Dron Hill (Cup Marked Stone)

You could be a wee bit dissapointed when you first see this rock after walking up a long and very steep track for about an hour but once pull up a piece of turf and start to enjoy the view it all seems more than worth it.
This site has fantastic views, its even better on hazy day because you cant see Dundee.
The stone is marked by about 30 cup-marks , six forming three dumb-bells and four or five that look like they sit within a 30mm channel rather than being linked by one as reported on Canmore.

St.Martins (Cup and Ring Marks / Rock Art)

This is a Cracker! I had a bit of trouble finding this stone because CANMORE has it sited in the wrong place. In fact nobody seems to have seen it since 1911.
The best Route to take when visiting the rock is to take the road from Balbeggie to St.Martins and turn up the Gracefield farm road , Follow the road up to the old farm and then go round the back, Follow the track east ( South Friarton house should be one field north on the right ) past the a few field clearance piles, Park at the end of the track beside the gate. If you see a couple of huge rocks at the edge of the field you are in the right place! Climb the gate and head up the track to south friarton. You will see a line of trees at the top of the field, the rock is at the west end of the trees at the edge of the field. Happy hunting. SCOTTY

Macduff's Cross (Standing Stone / Menhir)

If your thinking of visiting this site just click on the map for directions because my best attempt at directions would be' on the back road from Newburgh to nowhere' !

CANMORE list this as a sandstone boulder with marks as a result of weathering...... Not a chance mate!

This is a lovely little standing stone with great examples of cupmarks on two side and the top. The stone stands on a little mound surrounded by stones added by the good folk of Newburgh in the 1850s. The field that the stone stands in also has a few little mounds dotted about.

Parking is for one car only in the farm road end just next to the site.

The local residents would like it if you don't block the road so please leave enough room for a tractor/horse and cart.

Denmarkfield / King's Stone (Standing Stone / Menhir)

Best visited by taking the Scarth road from Luncarty and parking at the side of the river Tay. Follow the path south along the river for about 1 mile. The stone stands at the back of Denmarkfield farm next to the river. A few cup marks on the top of the stone and a much later axe shaped carving on the side.

The Kor Stone (Standing Stone / Menhir)

This 8ft stone stands on the fench line between Drumacher farm and Milton farm just west of Harrietfield. The stone once form part of the fence and still has fence bolts drilled in it near the base. No marking apart from them. Permission sould be asked for at Drumacher farm.

Moncrieffe House (Stone Circle)

A dream home for a megarak. This circle stands on the lawn of Moncrieffe house near Bridge of Earn. It was moved here in the 70s from its original site a few hundred yards away because it was in the path of the M90 motorway. Just to the east is a cup mark boulder moved at the same time as the circle And infront of the house stands the Bore stone of Gask, a damaged cross slab with breathtaking carvings.

Permission must be sought to visit the site as it is in a private garden.

Gleneagles A (Standing Stone / Menhir)

A nice stone just inside the field. About 3ft tall with a tapered top. The stone fell down a few years ago but the farmer put it back up.

Gleneagles B (Standing Stone / Menhir)

A nice little stone and very easy to visit. The stone stands about 5ft tall and was recycle by the Picts for a spot of abstract art. The carving is supposed to be of a goose.

White Stone (Standing Stone / Menhir)

This one is a bit tricky toget even if it is just at the side of the A9. Southbound from Perth take the farm road just west of the filling station and drive up to the farm for permission. The stand is a mighty impresive site standing 8 or 9ft tall at the edge of the field. A good few cupmarks on the south face. The stone has been polished around the base by hundreds of years worth of livestock having a scratch.

Be warned ! Getting back on the A9 from the farm road is bit of a task. Most of the cars are at top speed at this point so give yourself plenty room.

Fowlis Wester Standing Stones

When visiting this site it's best to park in the village as there is nowhere to park on the track without blocking it. It's only a short walk and the view make it worth the exercise.

Witches Stone (Monzie) (Standing Stone / Menhir)

Just along the drive from the cairn is this 5ft single stone. No markings to speak of but still worth a visit. The stone stands on the remains of a 70m causeway and leans to the NW.

Monzie Circle (Stone Circle)

Stands just inside the gate of Monzie castle near Crieff.

A nice wee site with plenty to interest the hardend Megarak. The eastern stone on the cairn has some nice rock art on the top as does the earthfast slab just outside the cairn, More cups and rings than you could shake a stick at!

Crieff Golf Course / Ferntower (Stone Circle)

Take a hard hat if your going to visit this one as your in real danger of having your skull split open by a golf ball!
Crieff golf club are rightly proud to has this collection of stones on the hole known as the doll.

Permission can be asked for at the pro-shop just inside the gate.

Clach Na Croiche (Standing Stone / Menhir)

We visited this stone back in oct 02 as part of a Scottish megarak sunday jaunt. It's reached via a path from the village that leads to an old railway bridge. The stone stands 7ft tall in the field on the other side of the bridge. On this visit we opted to stay at the bridge for two good reasons.

1. A couple of locals looking less that friendly at the fact we were ' Stangers round these parts'
and
2.More scarey looking than the locals was the possible radio active offspring of dolly the sheep in the next field.

Next time we visit will be under cover of darkness and clad in a radiation suit. A good reason for a return visit would be the eight cup marks at the base of the stone.

Witch's Stone (Standing Stone / Menhir)

Visited 11/01/03
This stone stood 4ft high and had chains and metal rings visable in living memory . Now the stone is sinking into the field and stands no more than 2 1/2 ft above the surface and no trace of the chains or rings can be seen. This stone has been dismissed as a glacial erratic but it still has a case as the remains of stone circle have been long ago distoryed are still lined up at the edge of the field .

Auchterarder (Standing Stones)

On Your return it's well worth having a close look at the stone above the street name sign . There is an ancient carving of a hand on this stone . The carving is on the face of the stone nearest to the road , Enjoy .
