Grime's Graves (Ancient Mine / Quarry) — Fieldnotes

Visited Grimes Graves on the way back home from a family sea side holiday. The site was indeed busy with tourists waiting to decend the ladder in their hard hats. My four year old son was devastated that they would not let him go down and burst into tears.

Pretty impressive the mines are though I must say, it is remarkable to think of all those years of prehistoric mining. To visit out of season would be a different experience altogether and one I may attempt one day.

Burn Hill Barrow (Round Barrow(s)) — Fieldnotes

Burn Hill is a marvelous site, arriving from Thame you need to take the left hand turn from the main road in Stone sign posted "Eythrope only." The footpath begins a short way down the road on the right hand side just before the National Speed Limit signs.

The name Burn Hill is something of a misnomer as there are two mound like hills next to each other. If they are indeed barrows (the site is only idenitified as a hill on the map) then this is an absolutley fantastic site!

Both mounds are topped with trees and huge. From the top you get views across to Thame in one direction and in the other you look directly over the top of Aylesbury which is rendered invisible by the landscape apart from the ever present monolith that is County Hall peeping over the top.

Wonderful!!

Thornborough Mounds (Bucks) — Fieldnotes

Making the most of a sunny afternoon with not much to do, I hopped on my motorbike and left the siege of Baghdad behind for a few hours.

I noticed on the sign that the circular walk passes by some iron age eartworks - didn't get far enough round to to see them. But I did notice earthworks very similar to ones I noted in an earlier post (visible from one of the mounds), in two other places along the walk.

They appear to be rows of ditches, but I have no idea if they have a any relevance at all.

Never the less a fantastic site and well worth the visit

Thornborough Mounds (Bucks) — Fieldnotes

Found the mounds easily, they are clearly visable from the road and there is a handy car park next to the medieval bridge.

The mounds are both in good condition, but I was a little disapointed to see tyre tracks running acoss one of them.

Looking down from the top, there is evidence of another (presumably) long gone structure visable in the ground.

Well worth a visit
Born in Leeds in 1970, I have been interested in all things ancient for almost as long as I can remember. First got into mythology at primary school, went to Ireland for the first time in the early 1980s and discovered the Tuatha De Danann and CuChulainn. Visited New Grange and Tara......the rest is history.

Been slipping slowly southwards since the early 1990s, now living in the Buckinghamshire / Oxfordshire area. Long term Copey fan to boot.
