Lying to one side, in a cleared area parallel with the forest track, the cairn sadly had a significant fire pit on top of the mound. Despite the low number of stones, the circle can clearly be seen.
Fernworthy Cairn and Cairn Circle (Eastern) - 29.3.2003
About 50 metres East of the circle (through a gap in the trees) there is a cairn, surrounded by the remnants of a cairn circle, lying just on the edge of the plantation. It looks like the trees have deliberately been cleared to allow the cairn and cairn circle to be seen. The cairn circle comprises of 5 stones (one barely a speck poking through the earth). A small diagram of this is included in my main diagram of the whole site (on the stone circle page). As with all the sites in the area a wooden marker post exists here (labelled 7D).
I don't know if it’s just the way the trees and undergrowth have been cut back but it looks like a serpentine shaped avenue back to the circle. I spotted two really tiny slivers of stone sticking through the earth on the way back to the circle, which got me wondering if there was originally a stone row that led to this cairn? It’s hard to really tell much because who knows what was cleared or moved when the trees were planted, or when they were cleared!?
