Directions: Travelling north through the village of Penderyn you will see a signpost to the right for Cwm Cadlan (opposite the Lamb Hotel). Follow the single track road through the valley for about 1 mile and you will come to a farm house on your left. In the field in front of the farmhouse you will easily spot the large cairn. It is about 1.5 metres high and 10 metres in diameter. There is also what appears to be a standing stone sticking out of the top! (about 1 metre square). Although the cairn is only about 20 metres from the road it is clearly on private land and I didn't fancy climbing over the fence for a closer look. The field was full of sheep. I didn't have time to ask for permission at the farmhouse so settled for a roadside view instead. The cairn appears to have been dug into at some point in the past and there are several small trees growing around its edge.
Further along the road, as it opens out into open countryside, you will easily spot another cairn on the moor on your left hand side. My O/S map shows two cairns but I could only see the one. Again, the cairn was of a decent side but not as large as the first. I didn't have time for a closer inspection so again settled for a view from afar.
Coflein states that the cairns are probably clearance cairns and not prehistoric. I am no expert but they do look like the other cairns I have seen today. Also, they are not that far from other cairns to the south at Cefn Sychbant (SN977110) and Mynydd-Y-Glogg (SN972088) so perhaps they are older than currently believed?
Either way it is a lovely drive along this minor road across the Brecon Beacons National Park (a road I have never been along before) and worth a visit for that reason alone.
