Danbury

Hillfort

Danbury (Hillfort) by GLADMAN The 13th century church of St John the Baptist stands inside the enclosure. Never envisaged posting an image of one of these, but if they insist on building them within Iron Age hillforts...

I may be wrong but I think it is quite unusual to find a church on a hillfort. They often seem to be built over ancient burial grounds or stone circles. tjj Posted by tjj

St. Roche's Chapel once stood in the middle of The Trundle near Chichester and I believe there were also a fair few Roman temples (Canctonbury being one of them) built within hillforts, but yes I think it is unusual. A R Cane Posted by A R Cane

There's a Roman temple inside Maiden Castle as well, as I recall....... GLADMAN Posted by GLADMAN

I meant to add that it is a lovely photo - great light. I've nothing against old churches, they're part of our heritage too. tjj Posted by tjj
