£10m grant for centre from Heritage Lottery Fund

The Heritage Lottery Fund announced last night that they'd be giving ten million pounds towards the Stonehenge visitor centre improvements. Government axes £10m. HLF provides £10m. See we're all in this together and charities can make up the slack. Keep buying those scratchcards. Yes I am being sarcastic. By the way, if you've got a spare nine million pounds then that'll make up the total that EH are going for.

Nothing on the EH website yet though, slightly curiously.

Don’t be bashful Goff – you were first with the news late last night! This is Hampshire » News » dated 19 November ran it and then appeared to pull it shortly afterwards. The first few paragraphs of their news release read -

“STONEHENGE has been given a £10m boost, thanks to the Heritage Lottery Fund, it has been revealed.

“The grant will support work to remove the existing visitor facilities allowing the experience of the stones to be more naturally integrated with its ancient processional approach and the surrounding landscape. These improvements will give people the chance to explore what the site would have been like thousands of years ago.

"The project aims to improve the visitor experience, including the creation of a new carefully designed visitor centre which will include education and exhibition spaces to help people learn more about Stonehenge’s history. The project will also support training opportunities and a new volunteering programme.”

Hah! Cheers, LS!

To be honest, I surprised myself with my self-restraint in respecting the embargo! :D Or was it that I just wanted HA to have the scoop? ;)

Only 9 million squiddly-did? A drop in the ocean for the likes of the Olympics. Mind you, Stonehenge won't line the likes of Lord Coe's bottomless pocket, will it?
Good news, of course, but I fear someone will say 9 million is too much, after all, it's only our past.
