2010 Summer Exhibition – John Aubrey
Stumbled on this by chance today whilst having a potter around the ever enjoyable city of Oxford. An exhibition for the 350th Anniversary of the Royal Society.
John Aubrey (1626-97) "recognised as a pioneer in English archaeology was one of its founding members". I was of course drawn to the section on Megalithics – Aubrey's original book Templa Druidam is on display with a "turning the pages" facility. This is so worth a visit, Aubrey's drawing and texts about Stonehenge, Avebury, Silbury (Selbury), Rollrights, Stanton Drew, Devil's Arrows and to my personal delight, Bilcaw-wain (Boskawen-un). There are computerised notes to explain Aubrey's texts.
His mathematical books and instruments are also on display, fascinating though I admit over my head – must go back.
