Harestone Down Stone Circle

Stone Circle

Fieldnotes

Went to visit Harestone Down Stone Circle with Rex today but unfortunately it now has a quad bike track all around it and was being used at the time of my visit.
I went via the White Horse Trail but it also looks like they don't want people going onto the land as the entrance to the field from this track had barbed wire all across it.
I got to visit East Kennet long barrow and a few interesting Tumuli in the area so it wasn't a wasted journey.

Sorry to hear of your disappointing visit Chris.
When I visited last year, I came along the field boundary from East Kennet long barrow.

The guys on the quad bikes appeared and asked what I was doing there. Told them I was photographing the long barrow and showed them Terence Meaden's book, The Secrets of the Avebury stones. They turned out to be the land owners' sons and when
I asked if it was ok for me to be there, they were really cool about it. I also asked if they knew of the location of some of the stones pictured and one of them gave me a lift on the back of his quad bike right to it. They gave me full permission to walk on their land and photograph whatever I wanted. They even pointed out buried stones in the wooded area over looking little Avebury.
Asked about the quad bike track, the site is not listed as an historical site and no form of protection order has ever been proposed.
The site has never been properly examined in any archaeological sense and certainly no excavations made.

Suggest you try another visit some time, but bear in mind the vegetation can get excessive in summer and obscure the stones.
