Devizes Museum - Lecture on My Landscapes by Peter Fowler - 5th May 2007 This event will consist of two halves: a short lecture exploring relationships between landscape and art, with particular reference to Wiltshire and to 'my landscapes', in both senses, as viewed over 40 years by an old archaeologist and over 4 years by a young painter. The lecturer will then lead a guided tour of his exhibition, 'Landscape Painted and Pieced', in the adjacent Gallery (which will be closed to the public for this occasion. If there are more people present than can be comfortably accommodated in the Gallery tour (c3.00-3.30), perhaps those who are in no hurry to depart could stand aside during a first tour and join a second one at 3.30 pm).
Peter Fowler has a long association with the Society, particularly in the 1960s and 1970s, when he was on the Council and Chairman of the newly formed Archaeology Committee. He has published widely, including in WANHM, and is regarded as one of the leading landscape archaeologists of his day. He was an Investigator with and Secretary of the Royal Commission on the Historical Monuments of England (RCHME), Reader in Archaeology at the University of Bristol and Professor of Archaeology at the University of Newcastle upon Tyne. He unexpectedly discovered he could paint in 2003 and now has a studio in Clerkenwell, London, where he lives. He has exhibited – and sold – locally there but, in his own words, this is his 'first one-man show in a real art gallery'.
