| Samuel Pepys visited the area in 1668 and described the sarsens as 'Stones of considerable bigness, most of them certainly growing out of the ground.' (quoted in Aubrey Burl's 'Prehistoric Avebury') The idea that stones grew in the ground was probably fairly widespread? as you can see from the Growing Stone in Wales, and the East Anglian Blaxhall Stone. |
