Marden Henge (and Hatfield Barrow)

Henge

Folklore

John Aubrey claimed the site had 'a tradition of a fight' and that a great man was supposed to be buried in the mound. (from Burl's 'Prehistoric Avebury' p178)

The lavishly illustrated Reader's Digest 'Folklore Myths and Legends of Britain' adds that the battle was between black haired and red-haired men. The redheads won and buried their dead in a cave on the downland.
