The Longstone of Mottistone (Standing Stone / Menhir) by goffik The stone is right next to Mottistone Cottage, which makes a nice little marker on the map to help you find it. :)

Cor, that looks like a great stone. Is the little bit broken off or another stone? thesweetcheat Posted by thesweetcheat

Hello! It's a stunning stone(s)! ;) I knew it was there, but knew virtually nothing about it prior to my visit. I was expecting it to be about a metre tall. :D According to the signage, it looks like it was a pair of stones that stood a the end of a longbarrow. Which is exciting. It was, sadly, only a flying visit as we had to get the ferry back, but it looks like quite an interesting area. I've just posted a photo of the sign for more info. http://www.themodernantiquarian.com/post/148432/longstone_of_mottistone.html :)

Hopefully it's legible. If not I'll transcribe it later.

I was very surprised... It's a beaut! Really gotta get back there and have a good old mooch around. I've cycled SO close to it a couple of times when I've been around the island, but never quite had enough time to stop off! goffik Posted by goffik

Fascinating looking place, IoW, somewhere I've never been but ought to be on the list for some time. thesweetcheat Posted by thesweetcheat

Oh, the island is absolutely beautiful! Not a huge amount in the way of big ancient stuff - a few lumps and bumps - but a lovely place for LOADS of walking and cycling... It's on my doorstep (well, a ferry ride away!) and because of that we've rarely visited. I've cycled around it a couple of times - and even worked there for 3 years! But I never got the chance for an explore. The Downs on the South side are breathtaking on a sunny day. goffik Posted by goffik
