Caerleon

Site of one of the three Roman Legionary Fortresses in Britain. Previously, the Hill Fort nearby was one of the strongholds of the fierce Silures. There is evidence that this site was refortified after the Romans left Britain - could this be King Arthur's Camelot? Geoffrey of Monmouth who was responsible for the firing up of the legend certainly linked Caerleon with Arthur. This website includes details of the recent excavation of the fortification.
