Clifton Down Camp (Hillfort) by GLADMAN The Avon Gorge..... no need for powerful artificial defences here. Perhaps - if this was indeed a tribal boundary - there was no defence against insults hurled across the water from Stoneleigh Camp, however?

You really do take some high-quality photos don't you? Another excellent set here - I've been meaning to visit this for ages, as it's not exactly far from home, this drags it a few notches higher. thesweetcheat Posted by thesweetcheat

This is a fabulous place and the reason I love Bristol. I was there last Friday but caught a bus out to Clevedon. There is an Iron Ave promontory hill fort there too - no visible ramparts any more but fantastic views out over the Severn Estuary. tjj Posted by tjj

Although (obviously) I knew about the gorge and bridge by reputation (sadly the place where some people end it all..... as confirmed by the Samaritans signs) ... the magnitude of the forts either side came as a very pleasant surprise. GLADMAN Posted by GLADMAN
