I know people with fabulous DSLR cameras which they use for photographing moths, butterflies and birds. Personally, wouldn't really want to carry one around.

Same here, my back's knackered enough as it is :)

I use a compact camera (pretty small). After I've packed my rucksack with all the biscuits and chocolate I need for the day there's no room left for anything bigger :)

On another note, any recommendations for photo software?

I use faststone image viewer (http://www.faststone.org/FSViewerDetail.htm)
You can edit and batch resize and stuff.
Mainly just use it for viewing photos which it's pretty good at and for free is all I need without getting me lost in millions of menus.
