The first settlers on Orkney ,post glaciation , like much of the UK would have had to have come from mainland Europe or in the case of Orkney maybe mainland Scotland . The Orkney vole is a potential clue ,although possibly belonging to a later immigration than the earlier ones .
Not a lot of Mesolithic bone but plenty of later examples which might provide a clue to the source of the various immigrations . Today there is a big Nordic / Scandinavian influence in the local genes but that might not have been the case with the earliest waves of immigration which may/more likely have come from further south and East , one day we may know for sure .

Do you know of anything S/E that could be considered precursor to Unstan ware?

Achnacreebeag is interesting in this respect.

Are we looking at N France for the pottery, the vole, the tombs, the whole blinking shebang!

Date wise how do the earliest scottish chambered tombs compare with the wessex LBs/CEs?

Northern France is always seems to be providing input to Scotland /UK , admittedly the Normans were not locals but northerners but from very early on it looks possible , Ms Sheridan supports it . Apart from the huge impact of that possibility then Norman invasion which transformed everything up here we had a big influence from Flemish culture too , lingo ,genes the whole caboodle . Time for another one ?

Scottish dates are usually poor for the earlier tombs and estimates tend to be later than 3700 BC if not considerably later .

Bougon 4700 BC
Ascott- under- Wychwood 3760-3695 BC
