Moss has written about Seahenge at the Kings Lynn Museum in her fieldnotes here. Just to add, and putting aside the question of whether Seahenge should have been moved, conserved and put in a museum (or just left to eventually sink beneath the waves) the Seahenge Gallery at Kings Lynn Museum really is worth a visit.

A couple of observations though: the Gallery seems to have been the work of two design groups – one very slick in the way the circle has been displayed against a huge backlight photo of Holme Beach (you can enter the wooden circle at this point as well as view it from the outside) excellent explanation panels throughout, and a short timeline video showing how Holme Beach has changed over some 4,000 years. There are then a couple of slightly bizarre Madame Tussaud-type mannequins and murals dotted about that really don’t do the rest of the Gallery justice (though might inspire the younger visitor) plus the fact that the central, upturned trunk is pushed against one wall and so not possible to walk around and see from all angles.

It’s difficult to put into words the effect this object can have on you; it’s massive and now dark from the conservation treatments used to consolidate it. It’s absolutely awesome though, and it doesn’t take much to imagine it perhaps being once festooned with flowers and offerings.

There’s a facsimile of the trunk almost directly opposite the real thing and, though not that well made, it does give a good idea of the top, flat upturned surface of the original which can’t be seen – no doubt in my mind that the trunk's ‘bed’ and protective roots were to hold a body (or a succession of bodies).

As Moss says, Holme-next-the-Sea should be your first port of call as it sets the stage for what you’ll see at Kings Lynn.
