I once drank a beer at the Old Crown at Hesket Newmarket in Cumbria (near Caldbeck, back o' Skidda'). Prince Charles once visited it as part of a community co-op thingy. The TwoFat Ladies went there too.
Anyhow, the beer I tried there in the late 90's was called Mediaevale. Instead of hops they used bog myrtle. This did indeed infuse the beer with a "taste", but, unfortunately if was a bit bland. Apparently, this was how they flavoured the beer in those times before hops. Me, well, I supped up, and got back on the Catbells Pale Ale.
Thank f*ck for hops, I say.
