I strongly suspect that syncretism is responsible for much of the Christian tradition. Lots of weird bits of Christianity spring from what for convenience I will call the British Isles (apologies in advance), confession, Arianism, even the tonsura magorum was distinct from the accepted Roman tradition. Who knows?
