Actually I'm thinking of Dyer's "Discovering Prehistoric England", not "A Guide To ..."

*cough* I was too lazy to walk over to the shelf at the time, a quick check confirms that is actually the book I was talking about :)

Good call with Burls circle guidebook, that also goes to new areas with me and used to be a permanent fixture in my rucksack.

I used Nicholas Thomas' 'Guide to Prehistoric England' (1960) a lot at the time and also because of where I lived in the south, 'Southern England:An Archaeological Guide' (1973). Both very useful with good map references and site descriptions for their time. Still got them both and still used.

PS...James Dyer was the author of Southern England:An Archaeological Guide.
