Daniken was exposed as a fraud long ago. A Horizon programme in the 70s was a delight, summing up the evidence against and, as I recall, challenging him directly.

One of the major issues was the misleading writing style - the kind of writing I term `propaganda writing' - where he'd suggest to the reader that a thing looks like something that supported his thesis, then take that as proven and build a complete fabrication that could trap the unwary.

One of his `looks like' photographs was of something that `looks like' a modern aircraft parking bay on the Plains of Nazca. It's actually about three feet across, evidently for very small aliens (oh, maybe they have very strong gravity on their planet.. :D) and it's actually the knee of the famous bird image depicted there.

My favourite was the collection of rocks Daniken had bought from a museum in Mexico or somewhere similar, which showed subjects such as a heart transplant operation. "These rocks are ancient," said Daniken. Well probably. Most rocks are. The pictures were quite recent, though. There was a guy a couple of miles away doing the drawings - he showed the magazine from which he'd copied the heart in the transplant operation. He then baked them in donkey dung to make them look old.
