As a lifelong anarchist committed to the cult of kingship (see the Cult of Kingship in Anglo-Saxon England: The Transition from Paganism to Christianity) perhaps we should be a little wary of chucking out the baby with the bathwater. The baby here is not the monarchy, let alone the present queen or her family, but the visible and tangible manifestation of our nation and its history, from the things and places we celebrate here, through great kings and queens like Alfred and the Elizabeths, poets, politicians and playwrights, something created by us – not by them. The whole tapestry of our history from the earliest times to the present, laid out before us in a pageant and a bugle call to celebrate who and what we are, not just yesterday but everyday if we care to look. And all that for 66p each (or there abouts) a year.
We can get rid of them, anytime we want (and we have done) but what do we get in their place? Bankers and Blairs? Presidents and Palins, “... idiots, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing?". No thanks, I’ll stick with what works and brings a little colour and a little meaning to our lives.
And as for Polly Toynbee’s soapbox rant in the Guardian recently – pha! Rory Bremner summed it up brilliantly on the Andrew Marr show with the words -
“She [Polly Toynbee] must feel like Richard Dawkins on Christmas Day.”
