There are often one or two objects (or paintings) we head for when revisiting a museum or art gallery - something that maybe struck a cord with us previously.
“To celebrate 10 years of free museum entry, Chris Smith, the politician who ended charging, introduces the big name curators and gallery-goers we [The Guardian] asked to pick their favourite work.” Neil MacGregor, Director of the British Museum, chose The Great God of War, a colossal statue of a lion, from Nimrud (northern Iraq) 883 - 859bce. Christopher Brown, Director of the Ashmolean Museum chose an Egyptian mace head that dates from 3,000bce. And Michael Dixon, Director of the Natural History Museum chose a fossil (the Archaeopteryx lithographica) and the Rosetta Stone at the British Museum ‘which is fundamentally important to our understanding of archaeology and ancient cultures’.
So, two questions: Should entry to all national museums and galleries be free of charge (excepting admission to special exhibitions) and what’s your favourite museum object?
